Meet our 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year...

Congratulations to Mrs. Peggy Gutierrez, Canterbury's 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year!
A mother of six, Mrs. Peggy Gutierrez has always had a natural aptitude for teaching.  Cherishing every milestone of her own children’s development, she realized her passion for teaching children in their formative years. Thus, she joined the world of kindergarten teachers.  Fascinated by the big world herself, she feels she can share her amazement with other curious minds. Mrs. Gutierrez creates a captivating culture of learning that provides structure and allows creativity. It would be easy to mislabel her techniques as “playful” when actually they are perfectly planned. Mrs. Gutierrez's expertise in early childhood combines the foundations of academics, self-love, self-confidence and self-respect. Through her kind and reassuring demeanor and acceptance of mistakes as a process of growing, she fosters a passion for learning and a confidence to achieve within her students.

Mrs. Gutierrez has been privileged to serve in the educational field at various levels.  She taught mathematics at Edinburg North High School and 3rd grade at St. Matthew’s Episcopal School.  She thrived as a substitute teacher and was a favorite among teachers and students. She took a permanent position as a music teacher. This experience allowed her to realize that music was a vehicle for learning.  Mrs. Gutierrez understands the numerous expectations at various levels of education.  These experiences solidified her philosophy and passion. With a smile… Mrs. Gutierrez takes her petite pupils by the hand, with a song on their lips, a hop in their step, curiosity
in their minds and a love for learning in their hearts.
